| | | Colin and I both joined up at the same time way back in 67, did out basic training together then our trade training together, after training we we both drafted to different ships and only saw each other very briefly about twelve months later, since then I have not heard anything about Colin or where he was even until I notice his name on the FR website, we exchanged messages to find if we were who we both thought we were and now keep in constant touch through e-mails and Colin is hoping soon to be able to come out to Malta to visit me, so many thanks to FR for reuniting to old mates

| | | I am Just a civilian born and raised in Northern Ireland and grew up from a young girl age 7 to a woman with her own children during the troubles here. I met a real good friend here when I was 14/15 in which I will get too but first I want to say something to every soldier who served here in Ulster!
I have always wanted to tell you guys and girls who protected me and many like me that so many of us loved you all very much and felt we owed our lives to YOU. So, from the little girl that was to the woman who now is ME Lorraine I thank you for being there and want to tell you my memories, firstly from the little girl who seen soldiers all around her, in her garden while she watched her mum make tea and sandwhiches day and after day as were we lived burned. I remember being lifted into open Jeeps and with the other kids we got to ride in them. I fell in love with a soldier called Barry and he promised he would marry me when I grew up and also his friend Doug. Now I don’t know what unit they were in but they had what was called busbies or budgies on their caps. Mum told me they had to go away and I was heart broken but was given some pennies to buy a gift for them both, so I ran up to the little shop and bought two chocholate bars and one black mens comb in which I gave Barry the choch bar and comb but Doug just got the choc, so I felt bad about that. We went to the barrack at woodburn sufolk to see them leave and it was a long line of convoys, the noise was very loud and I cried so much as all those around me did too. I hope were ever they are now that they remember me as I do them.
When 14 the Para’s were here and we had moved to Dunmurry as we all got put out of our homes. That’s just how it was back then. One day we seen a patrol and got talking to the soldiers that day. I talked more to one called Les Roff and we decided to write as he was being posted to Germany. He was a good friend and after he went he did write and to this day his letters are all kept safe by me. I am married and sure he is too but I just want to know how he is doing in life, so if anyone knows of him please let me know as I am on FR and have seen that he is too.
Before I finish, again, I want to say thank you for being here for us, you guys took so much abuse from people here but not all of us were like that and to this day when a soldier is killed here it effects me and I think deeply on their families as it happened on my soil. I shall never forget and hope this Testimonial will mean something to some of you if not all.
take care,
Lorraine Barber Rolf
