I am told Punchy Gibbons, many wont know his Christian Name, died after a domestic incident,I hope im wrong sadly I dont think so.Punchy was a character in the corps you had to see and hear to believe.Clearly affected by boxing,he was one hell of a handful after the consumption of falling over juice.Called to the NAAFI whenever he blew a fuse ? The ENTIRE Guard was called for.To bring him down we had to rush him rugby scrum way.A gentle man he would ask in the morning,I Didnt Hurt Any Of The Boys Did I Taff,Tell Me I Didnt Hurt Any Of The Lads.NCO many times over,he was often allowed a pint in the Cpls Mess,We knew he was safe with us.AT WAR with his misses he led a precarious married life and if taken home by the duty dvr,it was a dash back to the vehicle not to bring him back to camp or he would have you take him to pubs, very demanding but what a guy.All in all Punchy you were ours and I hope we looked after you ok.Even with his flaws,we are all mortal he is no longer in a ruck but at peace with the CO of The Skies.RIP MUCKER.YOUR MATES OF 10 REGT.RCT.Light a candle for our mucker,it should be possible even for big butch squaddies,he was one of us,he was in THE RCT. |

I was extremely privileged to have met this man.The first time on a bus going into Beilefeld town centre. He gave way to me because I had two suitcases.En-route he asked, Going on Leave ?.yes I replied, and you ?.,Flowers, its my wifes birthday tomorrow,no soldier on speaking terms with ones wife forgets that date of all dates.Where on that impregnable island of ours does one live ?.The stop he wanted had come and he got off.Second,I had taken one of our lads to the surgery in Rippon Barracks and was waiting for him when the gent passed the waiting room,he asked why was I there and as he did so I was told my mate was being hospitalised at BMH Rinteln. You need a lift ?I said,The Duty Driver brought us I will give 10 Reg Guardroom a bell,No he said,im going to Catterick myself, come on.Only a few steps outside and there was this staff car.Im popping up to see John Lee,know him ?.,Yes I said hes The CO,thats the chap im after, got a nickname for your CO ?.I started to stutter and the seat got hotter, now at the roundabout outside HQ in camp, quickly he said qickly,Sir. I couldnt possibly, out with it man,! Big Bad John! I replied, grovelling I said But I dont ! He stopped me,Course you do,is this your spot ? yesir, yes.Getting out first did nothing for the relationship between me and the RP Sgt as he threw one up,go on he said ?,by now I had realisedd who he was,Always return a good salute he said as he smiled as The CO,his 2IC,The Adjutant the RSM and even good old Chippy Woods Post NCO stood there in shock.Putting my beret on he said,No better not he said as he stepped to take the hand of our CO he said,John, Big Bad John,I didnt hear anything else I had slurped past Chippy and the back of HQ.There had to a third, and there was.Getting out of a plane that had just returned me to Germany. I could not mistake him as he walked in front of me towards his awaiting staff car and NCO Driver.Me I slung my case into the back of the 3 tonner that was available to pick me up when, slowly passing us he said jump in,but sir, but sir ?,In I got and we spoke of the Brigade,10 Reg,nightlife even, but this time I had to get myself to camp as he was late for a meeting with Bielefelds Mayor, direct after back to camp after leave, and we grumble no big deal duty driver coming behind.Thank You Sir,he said,No problem, same distance same amount of fuel, and if you cant help a fellow squaddie,we are all in deep sh...See you Taff, and there he was gone.No soldier could possibly mistake him,for he was AN OFFICER IN THE BRITISH ARMY .RIP BRIGADIER.RIP.
