My father joined the Merchant Navy in 1935 when he was 14 years old. He served on the first electric powered liner, the P & O Line Viceroy of India. Prior to W.W.2 he sailed mainly between the UK and India and the far east. At the outbreak of W.W.2 he continued to serve in the Merchant Navy throughout the war being awarded the 39/45 War Star, Atlantic Star, North Africa Star, Burma Star with Pacific Clasp and the War Medal. Immediately upon discharge from the MN at the end of the war my father joined the Royal Air Force and served in the Air Sea Rescue and Marine Craft Units at Koggala Ceylon, Butterworth, Seletar, Amble and Peel Isle of Man. He remustered and joined the RAF Police where he served at Debden, Thorney Island, Cottesmore and Akrotiri Cyprus. He completed 22 years RAF Service and was awarded the RAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Whilst in the RAF he became both a qualified football referee and a qualified cricket umpire and represented the RAF at Bisley shooting. He was demobbed in 1968 and went to work for Lloyds Bank until he retired aged 65. My father spent his retirement in Southend on Sea, Essex where he was born and died in 2002 after three years of illness suffering from Alzheimers Disease. |
