Don Mason

To 2005

I do not know the exact details. All I know is that via the grape vine, is that Don passed away approx. 3 years ago which would be 2005. One memory of Don would be that he indirectly caused me to receive 14 days confined to barracks and removed from the Absentee and Deserter section. I was awaiting my hometown girl friend to arrive. In the meantime an absentee surrendered himself at the gates at London District. I was not on duty this particular Saturday but I agreed to aid in escorting this absentee to the cells. As we were departing my girl friend arrived. So we took her with us. Unfortunately we pulled up alongside DAPM Lt. Col Pilitz in Knightsbridge. He told his taxi driver to follow our Land Rover. Which he could not as we were going too fast?. Needless to say that when we got back to base, we were put under open arrest. Don was a regular, where as I was a National Serviceman, so he did not receive any punishment. I do have a photo of Don and myself along with a couple of WRAC Police, but it is more than the 50K allowed. Don also escorted me and a girl home from the NAAFI club on the night of my demob. He did not think that I was fit to drive. That what friends are for. I attended his wedding in 1962 and then lost all contact.
