Staff Sergeant David Best
David (Dave) Best was born in Bradford in 1946 and enlisted into the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry in 1965 where he served in Berlin, Aden and Northern Ireland. In 1970 he was discharged but within six months re-enlisted into the RCT as a Clerk.
He was initially posted to 4 ADTR in Duisburg; this was followed by postings to the GTR in Hong Kong and 1 Sqn RCT in Colchester. On the deployment of the Iron Division to BAOR in 1977, David returned to Duisburg this time as the Chief Clerk of 21 Sqn RCT where he completed an Op Banner tour with the Squadron. Later postings included 28 Tpt & Mov Regt RCT in Dusseldorf, 156 Tpt Regt RCT(V) in Liverpool and LE(A) at Andover.
David was a fanatical Leeds United supporter and dedicated Ten Pin Bowler and he regularly represented various Unit Teams at several locations, winning numerous trophies en route.
On leaving the service in 1987, David and his wife Marilyn settled in his home town of Bradford and in 1988 he took up employment with British Aerospace in Saudi Arabia, finally returning home in 1994. He later worked for both the Royal Mail and later Parcelnet where he was working when he tragically developed a serious chest infection. He subsequently underwent an intensive programme of treatment and he appeared to be making some headway. However after developing some complications his condition worsened, although through sheer willpower he appeared to be rallying and was looking forward to returning home. Then quite suddenly his condition rapidly deteriorated and David died on the 27th June 2008 at the age of just 61. David leaves his wife Marilyn and two adult children Paul and Paula, by whom he will be sadly missed.
