Memories of Ieper
The old man has tears running down his cheek.
His memories don't allow him to speak.
What do we know? What was hell.
We can only ask, they can not tell.
The list of names seem never to end.
Here are names of loved ones and a friend.
For us they fought in some muddy field.
And still today they will not yield.
As I sit and write, I look across the open spaces.
Remembering all the dead of many races.
The rain is falling and all is wet.
Please lord never let us forget.
All I can hear is the rain going pit-a-patter.
They could hear the guns go ratter-a tatter.
They could hear the blasts and screams.
Which go on forever it seems.
Across the battlefields humans are dying.
Because maybe Politicians were lying.
Surely we must work so wars can cease.
And let all our brave dead rest in peace.
Cyril Burton.
