'Battalion plans
homecoming parade
A homecoming parade has been arranged for
the Royal Scots Borderers after its first operational
deployment in Iraq.
About 500 soldiers from the battalion - formed by the
amalgamation of The Royal Scots and The King's Own Scottish
Borderers - are stationed in Basra.
They hope to hold a homecoming parade in Dumfries on 7 June
this year.
Councillors have been asked to admit the Royal Regiment of
Scotland as honorary freemen of the region on the same date.
Dumfries and Galloway was one of the main recruiting areas
for the KOSB and, along with South Lanarkshire, remains a
recruiting area for the Royal Scots Borderers.
The first operational deployment of the new battalion got
under way last year.
They were sent to Iraq to help train and mentor local
security forces during a six-month tour of duty.
That tour of duty is due to end in May and it is hoped the
soldiers could parade through Dumfries the following month.
