Trained as a residential social worker. Work in this capacity for Wiltshire County Council for 10 years before the stress got to me. Trained and qualified as a Tech Author, worked in Calne and Swindon in this capacity.
Member of the Green Party and was a Calne Town councilor for a number of Years. , married with 6 adult children.
A keen recycler I got involved in setting up Wiltshire Wood Recycling Community interest company and became a Director, Exciting venture.
Retired now , retirement forced by a difficulty remembers things, not a good thing in business. I made the mistake of going to see the doctor who sent me for tests which eventually diagnosed me as being in the early stages of Altziemers, After about 3 days in shock and despair I eventually said to my self " shit happens, it’s happened to you so dealwith it" I have tried to live up to that over the last 2 years and am taking part in a trial of a new drug, does not seem to be helping me but as one of my children ( or my wife I cannot remember which) said I do not know what I would be like had I not had the drug. Happy to talk to any one else affected by Altziemers.
Update added Nov 2010.
I’m obviously still here. The drug trial ended because there was an above average number of people on the trial with skin cancer. I have not been offered any other trials.
I have had some publicity on radio (Clare Balding Rambling Sat ao 0600 Radio 4) and television (BBC TV National news lead item).
Followed by a phone call from Mick Frost (ex Lyneham) who lives near by who had heard me on the radio. He contacted the wood recycling company that I was a director of and had mentioned on the Radio (never miss an advertising opportunity on Radio 4) and I finally met up with him last week.
I am still able to go around on my own and live independently and people are surprised when I tell them that I have Altziemers. It does not often show outside of the home. i have been volunteering at a Breakfast session for the homeless in Chippenham. I am still a good listener and I think that some of the guest (most of whom know that I have altziemers talk to me to unload whatever thev need to unload thinking that I will for get it.
Dinner is ready. Bye. |
