What a culture shock civvy street was! My first job was on the Parks & Gardens department of the local council. Got trained in tree surgery, but I longed to get near the sea & boats again. At one time I considered signing up again! Then along came a position of Dockmaster at Ramsgate Royal Harbour. That’ll do for me Tommy, I thought and wasting no time my application went in and two weeks later I was among the boats once more. Happy as Larry I was, then I was made redundant due to a down-turn in Harbour & Marina traffic. So I picked myself up and heard from my bruv-in-law of a temporary position (only 14 days) at Pfizer Ltd Pharmaceutical firm at Sandwich. I applied and luckily got it. I now am an operator in the Power House, looking after Gas Turbine Generator’s & Waste Heat Boilers along with an array of other plant on site.
That was 29 yrs ago, have now taken voluntary redundancy along with early retirement. |
