Belize in 1983 written by steve mcbrearty
I was stationed in Holdfast camp for the stay that I will never forget.
I was attached to 49fld regt and was the driver of one of the gun crews (105 LIGHT GUN)
I had only passed my driving test prior to my tour, and to join another regt a be their gun crew driver was quite a challange!!
Almost every fire mission we had was a race against the other gun crews, yip I was always last into action much to to dissapointment af my gun crew.
At the end of the exercise we would drive the guns to Sanignasio village and I would reverse the 105 into the river and whilst the crew cleaned the gun I cleaned my 1 tonn land rover.
One afternoon when we were in camp at lunch time we were told that their would be a gun crew inspection.
Here was my chance to make it up to the boys.
I got the keys for the land rover hitched up the gun and speeded to Sanignsio river (ON MY OWN!!)
On reversing into the river with he gun I though I would just go that bit deeper in order to speed up the cleaning of both the gun and vehicle.
Needless to say I flooded the engine and the locals pulled me out.
I missed the inspection and was put on gaurd dutie or the night!!!!!
The rest of the crew seen the funny side of it as the officer came round to inspect the vehicle, gun and crew.
Thanks to sgt Jonie payne he also seen the funny side of it and the rest of my tour was most enjoyable. |
