Troopship Oxfordshire in 1962 written by peter richards
I was priveleged to be on the Oxfordshire's last trip to the far east, accompanied by various military bands from the Indian sub continent as well as some from our own Regiments. It was truly a lifetimes experience, a musical cruise that I could never afford out of my own pocket.Passing Gibraltar and Malta without stopping, the first port of call was Port Said. The 'bum' boats were something else, espescially when being chased by the harbour police, in rowing boats. Accompanied through the canal by the Canberra and a French Troop ship, the Nevasa, sister to the Oxfordshire passed us Northbound halfway through the canal. Second port of call was Aden, where some dissembarked, then on to Cochin, where the Sikh, Indian and Gurkha bands left us. Final port of call , for me, was Singapore. |
