R.A.F. Mount Batten. Plymouth. Devon. in 1980 written by Robert Cozens
I recall headig down toward Marine Dock to go out to H M A F V Sea Otter for a Three week Detatchment, a Mate of mine was walking up the other way, it just after Lunch. He grinned and said to me.
"Off on Sea Otter again Robbie". My reply was. "Yes Bob Come with us and have a good time". His reply was. "No I can have a good time down here". That was it. We set off for the north first stop was Scrabster Scotland, we did have some good times and "played games" with other Vessels. Came back calling in at a few ports to play with Choppers etc. Some three weeks later we arived back at R A F Mount Batten. On Entering the Marine Office I saw a friend of mine looking some what Cut and Bruised! I asked him what he'd been doing, his answer was nothing short of a Big Shock that I asked him to say again? He did. He told me that he had been out with Bob and they had come off bob's Motor Bike and he was "DEAD" Those words Bob had Said to me rang in my head.
"No I can have a good time down here".
Bob Cave had died in a Motor Bike Accident while we were away having a good time working long hours at sea but also enjoying ourselves when off Duty.
Along with others I attended Hoo Church Service a few days Later, It was to be a Cremation folowing this Service. Bob Cave was 21 Years old. Those words will stay with me for Ever.
"No I can have a good time down here"
