temporary armourer 6 sqn rct in 1967
written by Robin Primmer

Cpl taffy Miles was our armourer in Duisberg.Every time the regimental post man went on leave,or a bat man i was always the one to fill in.I was dreading Taffy going on leave, as i didnt like the responsability of the job of armourer. Well the day did arrive, and i drew the keys from the guard house in the afternoon, checked all weapons and waited for the orderly officers inspection. All went off well,so off to the jolly old naafi for a celebration drinkie, but i had toooo muchie.Made my way back to the armourie to sleep it off.

I completly forgot the orderly officers inspection the next morning as i layed down on the stone cellar floor,on my back with my berry folded squarly under my head.I awoke at three thinking it was three in the morning, then i was awoken by a hammer pounding on the great steel door,of the armoury, and it dawned on me it was three in the afternoon.I unlocked the door ,it was my mate Chuck Riley the bedding store man.He told me all the camp was searching for me they thought id gone AWOL with the keys,i must have been dead in the morning when they came round.

I didnt get CO.s orders should have been court marshalled and drumed out,but thanks to Chuck we concocted a story .I think it went on the lines i went with him to collect 200 matresses with the duty driver, and the lorry broke down, got a ticking off.Iwas then told by a few that Taffy was prone to a little bit of AWOL on some of his previouse lesaves,so i started sweating toward the end of the 2 weeks.Taffy did come back on time, and you can guess where i took him the first night back,YES i did get him drunk, but he was there the next morning ,not like me.
