Normandy, Hill112 July 1944 in 1944 written by kevin titterton
I am trying to research a family member who gave his life in the Normandy campaign.
His name was (acting) Captain Charles Titterton, who served with the 179th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. He was killed on the 15th July 1944, and as he was buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetry, he could well have been killed around Cheux, Tilly-sur-Seulles, Caen or during Operation Jupiter and the battle for Hill 112.
Family recollections, though hazy, are that he was killed along with two others at the same time. Research that possibly confirms this is that two other artillery men from the 179th died on the 15th July, and are buried in close proximity to Charles. Their names are Lance Bombadier Charles Addison, age 36, from York, and Lance Serjeant Herbert Gray, from Aberdeen. Can anyone remember either of these men, or shed light on the Regiment at that time, that particular theatre of the war, or maybe know of someone who could help? All help will be gratefully recieved and acknowledged. |
