Imber village, salisbury plain. in 1960 written by Fred Wright.
Serving with 16th Independent Para.Brigade Group,on a scheme, we jumped onto the plain and were moving to Imber where we would set up for the night. The "enemy were the Welsh Guards, and as we came to a clump of trees we found a guy from 3 para,Ithink, sitting against a tree with blood pouring from his head which he attempted to staunch with a shell dressing.
We asked what happend and was told,"we came under "morter"fire, but the Guards didn't have morters so they chucked half bricks, and one hit me on the head."
We where a field surgical team, six of us, back-packing part of an operating theatre while the rest of it came along in a quarter ton trailer and rover,so we gave him the attention he needed and left him for someone else to see to.
WE had a previous engagement in Imber.
Later when we were set up in a derelict building a lieutenant came in cut to ribbons, both his uniform and him,sat him down and cleaned him up, sutures where needed,"what happend Lt.?"
"Well it was like this we caught a couple of the enemy rovers and took the guy's prisoner, but they're sunray said we can't leave the vehicles and radio's, after all we are only playing at war,we should take them with us,and like a fool I agreed, and as soon as the driver
started up he tried to take off,one of my para's was standing in one rover and immediately raised his rifle butt above the drivers head, who decided not to risk a head-ache and switched off.
I was standing behind the other vehicle and grabbed the back of it as he drove off, I threw my rifle and fixed bayonet at him javelin style but missed and it went through the windscreen so he dragged me through a load of barbed wire until I let go and he got away."
The next lot were six engineers who
were sitting round a petrol stove brewing up when it exploded.
We sure didn't need mock-up casualties. |
