Hong Kong (Sek Kong) in 1956 written by Alan Lavercombe
Arrived from Korea Jan '56. After the sub-zero temperatures in Korea we surprised a few locals by going swimming while they were all freezing. Our new O.C. turned out to be Capt Derek (excused boots) Burls, who always preferred brothel-creepers. I'd first met him in Kure. Great posting, Kam Tin across the airstrip and Yuen Long just down the road. We're back in the land of the living. First port of call on Saturdays was the Kowloon Restaurant for mixed grill and scotch pancakes, all for five bob in the old money, Then a night on the town. What should have been my last week-end was wrecked by the riots of 10th Oct '56, then 7 weeks and 5 days on the Captain Hobson, via Mauritius and Capetown to the exotic port of Liverpool and demob. Oh how I suffered doing my National Service. |
