REME HONITON DEV0N 1956 in 1956 written by BOB CONNOR
Joined Nov 1956, Intake No 56/22 and given No 23352948. Iremember the parade ground overlooking the main road and being taught the art of rifle drill by Cpl Bowers, also what sticks out in my mind are the drill sheds and the sore insides of the left heel when brought to a halt, which incidently always sounded like a machine gun going off.Anyway we managed to scrape through first time.Next move was to Norton Manor Camp Taunton where I had a 3 month course as a Vehicle Mechanic.I think one of the Instructors was a Sgt Swiggs, who at the end of the course took us into Taunton for a celebration drink but after three pints of scrumpy were escorted back to camp by the Red Caps. From Arborfield, was shipped out to 77 HAA REGT RA as a motor cycle mechanic to the RA trials team, which was a cushy number, and was there from 57 to early 58 until the regiment disbanded This regt was at Adelhide NW Germany. Early 1958 moved to 35 LAA Regt RA which were based in Delmonhorst NW Germany. in the LAD Workshops,Had a couple of weeks in the Black Forest skiing with not much success, then came Nov 1958 back to Blighty on the Empire Wansbeck via Harwich and straight home.
I will say that it was the best and funniest two years of my life. |

There is nothing worse than breaking down. But if you do, the RAC have more than 1,500 patrols ready to rescue you, whether you are at the shops or on the motorway. They will always try to fix your vehicle at the roadside, but if they cant they will make getting it repaired as painless as possible.
