RAF Shallufa in 1948 written by Robert Ramsay
Arrived Shallufa early 1948 to signals unit working VHF/DF,Control Tower and El Shatt bombing range, was surprised to find about 100/150 German Africa Corps prisoners still there. Poor sods homes were in Russian Zone so were not being sent back (to save their lives). We had a lot in common, just wanted to go home and be civvies again, they worked the messes, MT yard , Instrument repairs, met. and others. I regret to say when they found a home for them in Turkey and they left, the station was not the same, lousy food, dirty vehicles etc. During the time they were there I found myself on guardduties with several of them, they carried large wooden battons, we carried the rifles , had some interesting coversations and memories that have lasted |
