4 div sigs regt in 1954 written by Paul Dunkley
I had an absolute whale of a time in Herford. I was a National Serviceman there from 1954 to 1956 and almost "signed on" when it came time to leave. Glad now I didn't though.
One night I was Orderly Corporal and had to make sure the NAAFI was emptied at the appointed hour. I cleared the OR's section without problem and then had to clear the Corporal's Section. We had a big Lineman Corporal called Buggsy Simms (think i've got that right) who rumour had it was a wrestler in Civvy street; Buggsy liked his "bevvy" and was in his cups when I asked him to leave; he refused and told me where to go (something along the lines of "go forth and multiply!). I then made the mistake of touching his shoulder and the next thing I knew, I was flying down the stairs. However, as I lay in a crumpled heap, gingerly testing which bones were broken, Buggsy came down the stairs full of remorse, offered to carry me to the MO's. Since i had by this time discovered I was OK, I assured him there was no need. Thereafter, he couldn't have been nicer and always helped me to clear the NAAFI whenever I was on duty. |

There is nothing worse than breaking down. But if you do, the RAC have more than 1,500 patrols ready to rescue you, whether you are at the shops or on the motorway. They will always try to fix your vehicle at the roadside, but if they cant they will make getting it repaired as painless as possible.
