Redesdale Camp. 58th Medium Regt. R.A. in 1954 written by Matt. P. Rooney
Arriving at the camp was a bit offputting after having been abroad for three years, and it was a wee bit chilly after Hongkong and Malaya. It didnt help that we were 'living' in wooden huts in the middle of nowhere, and if someone forgot to shut one of the doors properly we got an early morning call from the local sheep. Saturdays we went to Morpeth in Northumberland and I Volunteered to be their driver. I did have permission to visit my Sister who stayed in the vicinity, just as long as I got them back to camp in time. Our duties were to look after the Camp so that the T.A. Regt.s could practice their skills, with them borrowing extra equipment ie: Guns vehicles and anything else we had in stock. The NAAFI Club was about? a mile away from the barracks and it catered for the T.A. as well as ourselves. They held quite a few dances there that I do remember, so that the T.A. could enjoy at least part of their stay. Then when the Units returned to 'Civvy Street' we the Staff had to find lost equipment. How can anybody lose a 5.5 Gun, and it weighed 9 Ton. |
