D Day plus 6 in 1944

 I embarked on a flat bottom boat with a crew of u.s a. sailors, we sailed from Portsmouth, there was about fifty bods on board, and we where part of a holding unit. We landed at arromanche at about 2pm, and we never got our feet wet. We were told to get off the beach, and not to linger as jerry was shelling the beach so we just had to m,ake our own way inland following the signs of the holding unit. The traffic was nose to tail, and I thought if jerry comes over with his planes theres going to be a mess.But we were lucky that day. I suppose I must have marched about 10 miles and it was getting dark, I thought I would stop for the night in a field with no mines. there was a shallow ditch in the field so I put my kit downand coverd it up, took my boots off, we all had a tin of meat and veg which was heated up, made some tea, filled my pipe and had a smoke before I hit the hay. Lucky it did not rain that night so I had a dry bottom. Next morning I made my way to the site where the holding unit was. there was lines of tents, for people to put there kit in and sleep. I thought this is great sit out in the sun all day waiting for some poor bod to get knocked off so you can take his place. 8 a.m. next morning after breakfast we were all detailed off given a days rations, put in a truck and taken to a field where there were piles of artillery shells, and as the trucks came in loaded, we had to unload them. Do you know I have never worked so hard in all my life, that went on day after day for three whole weeks, boy was I glad when I got posted to field ambulance, that was at a place called Ranville, it was tea time when we got there, and they gave us, waitfor two slicesof white bread with butter and jam, boy did that taste good. There was only one complaint I had to make, I had joined 174 Highland Field Ambulance, it belonged to 153 brigade, that in turn was part of the 51st Highland Division, I could not understand what they were tallking about .thats about it.Sorry they do say if all else fails read the instructionsI did not read one paragraph |
