CYPRUS (Turkish Invasion) in 1974 written by KEITH HOOD
As a sector warden in Famagusta I was responsible for evacuation of 40 military families to Dhekalia. Two phases were given 2 weeks apart, on the second, ALL families were to go. We were on the roof of the Lion House (HQ) in the centre of the city when the Turkish Phantoms bombed the fuel storage tanks in the harbour and the areas around the Varosha district. A convoy of any type of military vehicle was lined up outside the HQ to lead the evacuation of any and all people wanting to get out. After 3 hours, our teams managed to leave FamaG with no Brit military personnel. Eventually, our families left us for the UK. Whilst the team leaders re-entered the town accompanied by Turkish armed soldiers, to identify Brit houses for future collection of household items. Whilst touring the secured houses, I mastered the emptying of a FULL lorry load of soft drinks abandoned in the street, to the safety of our lads in the HQ and back on base at Ay Nik. With a colleague I also managed to find and secure valuables belonging to local family friends under the noses of the Turks, for their future. An exciting, but dangerous time, I am still in touch with both friends and fellow wardens of the same era. |
