Abington Hall, Cambridgeshire in 1939 written by Geoffrey Tiplady
The Abington Historical Society would like to hear from anyone who served at Abington Hall or in the fields nearby during World War 2. I as a schoolboy remember the Valentine Tanks in Church Lane. The Lothian Border Horse damned our small stream to test the Valentines ability to survive underwater conditions. Did any survive? The bridge where the Dam was erected did not; an enemy bomb destroyed it long after the Dam was removed. The Duke of Gloucester arrived to inspect this unit. He did nothing to inspire a group of schoolboys.
Cameronian Highlanders with there highly desirable cap badges arrived from Dunkirk. They carried loaded guns at all times and stayed only a few days. A Belgian unit left all their tent boards when Brussels was liberated, they were still there to be burned on VJ night.Frank Woolley, the England Test Cricketer, commanded a searchlight unit nearby and led his team against a very young Village team. One match was interupted by a Halifax Bomber crashing at Pampisford Wytch.

There is nothing worse than breaking down. But if you do, the RAC have more than 1,500 patrols ready to rescue you, whether you are at the shops or on the motorway. They will always try to fix your vehicle at the roadside, but if they cant they will make getting it repaired as painless as possible.
