cyprus in 1974 written by Rosalind Mace nee sopwith
my memory of cyprus is when i served in qaranc at bmh dhekelia in 1974 when the turks invaded the island all the island was cut off from the rest of the world we worked our socks off as the civis who helped maintained hospital ie laundry domestic cleaning were not allowed to work for the military.I remember our C. O. givinig us updates by standing on the hosp roof with his binos looking out over larnaca watching the turkish aircraft dropping bombs. we were all a bit frightened but we also had good times. The naafi was the best spot to be when we had time off as all military personnel was confined to bks HMS HERMES came over to help us out, the lads were confined to the laundry room proberly didnt have a clue how to use the machines all our lovely white uniforms were turned pink. Fortunetly the invasion came to an end but cyprus was never the same again. |
