raf spittlegate in 1961 written by sandra benfield
I joined up on the 24th June 1961. I remeber it was quite exciting at first. I arrived with my parents from Nottingham and eagerly looked forward to being joined by the other girls. One of them called Jean got off the bus that had brought her and several others from the station, wearing a typical 1960's flared dress with the winkle picker shoes. She looked just like Marilyn munroe with the bouffant hair. We were all taken to the reception room and there was a big surprise for me as there were two girls called Sandra Benfield, the other girl came from cambridgeshire(Ithink). We were soon put into our flights and soon became used to drill, cleaning etc. At the end of 6 weeks we went our different ways to our trade training camps. And then on to our main areas of work I went to Hereford and Then on to High Wycombe where I was to meet the man who I eventually Married. Sorry Mum he wasn't an officer. |
