Ex. Snow Queen BAOR / Bavaria in 1966 written by George Schesmer
I first went down to Sonthofen in southern Germany in 1965 as part of a recce team. Our aim was to secure strategic support for the bulk of British troops expected to take part on Snow Queen (a ski training exercise).
The boss was Col.Bruin (now deceased) and our driver was Walt (geordie) Bates. One day I had too many of those large beers and got enough courage (not the name of the beer), to try a stint on skis. I went down the slope like a rocket, but didn't fall over, which made me think "ah, I'm a born skiier"! I didn't look back after that. I did some survival training at St. Andreasberg in the Harz Mountains and then went down to Sonthofen again in 1966 and 1967 as a ski instructor, having a really great time in Hindelang and thereabouts. In '66 or '67 we lived in the General Beck Kaserne and the other year was in a group of huts somewhere in a hill called Mount Grunten.
Does anyone know what happend to Walt Bates or Smokey Attwood??
