shrewsbury in 1971
written by david haeckel

I first arrived in Shrewsbury in 1971 Sept.It was the first time I had been away from home, and I had only left school 6 weeks earlier,so I had mixed feelings as to what to expect,I was both excited and scared. We was met at the station and driven to the barracks"SIR JOHN MOORE BRKS"in Copethorne road.It was mostly red brick buildings, there was some modern buildings which was the education centre, training co,sgt mess,mi room.

I joined the band and it was not what I thought,as I was in the ACF,we had just drums and bugles, the band I was joining had trombones, basses, clarinets, etc. The bandmaster was a bit soft,a WO2 FITCH.the colour sgt we had was great, he eas from the Green Jackets a C/SGT Washington and we had a sgt Allen.A lot of time I got told off for not playing what was written as I used to put alot of my own stuff into the music we was playing,I thought it went better!

Saturday mornings used to be for the cross country run down muddy lane, along by the river and back into camp,we didnt rush to do it as we didnt want to get picked to do cross country for the depot in competions!.Before the run we used to be by are beds with a letter on it and a bundle of laundry,I and many others used to use the same envelope every saturday and thankfully didnt get found out as we had to write home regulary as some mum's used to phone up to ask how their son was as they've not heard from them!.

The CSM we had was a Sgt/Major DEWFALL,and we used to take the mickey out of the way he used to raise his voice after he gave us a word of command to tell us to "stand still nowww" a chap called EXLEY used to copy him good and got caught by him once, but he(CSM)saw the funny side of it.As I remember the town was good and we used to go to the castle often, and although we was not supposed to wwe used to visit the local pubs. The MARDOL was my favourite, the O.P.O.(old post office)was another pub, went in a few times.

I met some good mates whilst there and i hope that some may read this and get in touch.I also had a brother in the company,KEN.Like everyone I had good and bad times, but hey I like to go back if I could!.
