our compound (RAF Regt)like every1 elses flooded big time in rainy season & we had 1 really big puddle that did a good impression of a lake & was in a direct line between the officers mess & the sqdn. now most of our officers were fairly intelligent & parted in the middle 2 walk round it, but we had 1 young 1 who thought it made him look "roughy toughy" 2 stomp through the middle of it, but he wasn't counting on "mad" Max Windrum.

Now Max earned & lived up 2 his nickname on many occasions but he surpassed himself on 1 dark night. As a few of us walked 2 the naafi we could hear noises that sounded like digging coming from the middle of the compound, strange we thought so set out on a "recce" only 2 find max stripped naked except 4 boots, covered in mud & already up 2 his waist in a large hole where a small lake had been. max asked if we'd like 2 help but we politely declined & set off in search of beer.

the next morning saw max who had been digging all night trying to re-fill the hole with water using 5 gal gerrycans, this time we decided 2 help, every1 mucked in including some RE's who were billeted next 2 us. we made it in time & every1 from the WO down was out 2 watch the show

when the officers appeared they could tell something was up by the sheer no. of squaddies in the compound, but they performed perfectly, they all went round this by now smelly mudpool all except our favourite little J/O who innocently stepped off the edge of the world & in2 the "ABYSS" we hadn't realized how deep max had dug this hole but our favourite little J/O dissapeared out of sight leaving his beret floating on the surface only 2 reappear spouting like a whale.every1 was crying with laughter, us, the RE's, the WO, the adge, the 2i/c the co EVERY1

It's without doubht this kind of sense of homour that sets the RAF Regiment apart. The RE's thought it was great but couldn't believe it when nothing happened 2 max & were struck dumb when our co still crying patted him on the back & told him "well done, but go & get your self cleaned up" & then gave him the day off 2 get some kip. FANTASTIC DAYS FANTASTIC GUYS FANTASTIC REGIMENT PER ARDUA
