, Royal Signals, Singapore Student Riots in 1956 written by Kumaran Kunjoo
When the Colony’s Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock took tough measures to suppress pro-communist organizations in 1956, the students protested and camped at the Chinese High School in Bukit Timah Road. This caused severe riots that spread to many parts of Singapore resulting in 13 death and many more injured. To quell the riots in Singapore at that time, a curfew was imposed and many people were arrested.Members of the Kings Dragoon Guards were actively involved to contain the riots. They were temporarily camped in the parade grounds opposite the orderly room of GHQ Signal Regiment in Tyersal Park. I was one of the ten volunteers from GHQ Signal Regiment (FARELF) at Tyersall Park, sent to protect the army’s transmitter and military families at Chin Bee situated somewhere in Jurong. During those days, Jurong was very under-redeveloped part of Singapore with several farms in small villages.
Comments from anyone who may remember the 1956 Student Riots in Singapore would be most welcomed. |
