RAF Tobruk, Bakery in 1965 written by John Day
I was with Geordie Bradford, Sgt. Ted the bread ? and others, working in the last RAF bakery.
Hard work, hot environment but had afternoons off to go swimming.
Then returned to slice the hundreds of loaves already cooked, for next days delivery.
Wonderful memories when a young man.Played in The Spectres (Station rock band) and we were popular enough to get terrific booking at Benghazi in Hotel Berenice on seafront. Shell/BP gathering. Belly dancer, contortionist, other Army band was "un-organised" and we played throughut evening.
Had breakfast in bed and wrote in guest book "Musician from UK."
Flew from El Adem in ancient Dakota, quite low overland but was like East Anglia with sand.
Great memories. Swum in beautiful water off tall cliffs somewhere(?) and using face mask and snorkle dived endlessly in the see-through clear waters. A large shadow slowly appeared to my right and it was a massive shoal of tuna-like fish, thousands of them which took several minutes to eventually pass. Quite frightening because they could have attacked a lone swimmer (apparently) |
