RAF Swinderby, in 1962 written by Richard (Dick) Dawnay
I think it was ’62, but it could have been ’61, on an AOC’s practice parade the entire Station instead of doing the ’advance in review order’ and halting automatically after just 14 paces, continued towards the saluting dias, whereon stood the CO. The centre of the parade (where I was) marked time and the flights on the two flanks continued round so that, in the end the CO was marooned on his dias with the entire parade marking time. Another occasion we had a ’marching competition’. After the last flight had marched past and reformed the CO announced which flight had won the competetion. His announcement that it was ’the WRAFs’’ was greeted by the call of ’you dirty old man’ by every male on parade. Were you at Swinderby and did you take part in these parades? |
