REME Junior Leaders Unit, in 1958 written by Jim McDermott
November 1958. Brookwood Cemetry Remeberance Sunday Guard of Honour provided by REME/RAOC Junior Leaders Bn. Thick Fog. ’Taff’, I forget his surname, fainted and fell on his bayonet which pierced through his chin. "Stand still" hissed the CSM. Poor chap was dragged awayDecember 1958 REME/RAOC Junior Leaders Bn. Blackdown camp. Company office burnt to the ground. All records destroyed. Summer 1959. Marching exercise in Belgium. Flew Sabena Airlines to Brussels. Then trekked from village to village. People came out of houses to cheer us on - as if we had just won the war! Transpired that the RAEC Ssgt who had organized the trip, and was leading us, had been with the liberating forces from D-day on and we were retracing his steps. Very hot summer and we all downed several Belgium beers. Our average was 16 but no one seemed to bother.) Arborfield 1961. Practicing for the passing out parade. Drill was close quarter with nifty into line right form, fixed bayonets and a ’three cheers, hats raised at the end. Being so close together 4 of us, putting great effort into the movement to bring the hat down, drove the bayonet of the person to our left into our left bicep. No one really noticed till blood started trickling through our jackets. Straight of to the MRS for a tetanus jab. |
