London Palladium - "D-Day with the Stars" in 1963 written by David Parker
I remember, as a lad of 16 and a member of the Junior Leaders Regt R.A. band, playing the London Palladium for a midnight tribute to the forces who went into battle on D-Day. The year was 1963 and the date must have been close to 6th June though I can't remember the exact date.
The 'Top of the Bill' was Frank Eifield who had just made the No1 spot in the hit parade with "I remember you". The supporting cast was Jimmy Edwards, Alma Cogan, Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnston and, of course, the band of the JLRRA. We did the opening fanfare, an abreviated sample of our 'show' and a few of us where lucky enough to be chosen to sit at some tables while being serenaded by Alma Cogan. The 'finale' was heralded by a short sketch involving Frank Eifield and RSM Britton, who was famous for having the loudest voice in the world (as backed by the guiness book of records I believe!). All proceeds of the evening went to the RBL, I think and a special dispensation was granted to allow us 'boys' to take part after 10 pm at night. I have a lot of fond memories of the night and a lot more funny stories involving various characters during rehearsals and the actual performance but they must wait for another time!! |
