Training Regiment Royal Engineers, 871 plant sqn. fayid canal zone. in 1949
written by frank mitchell

871 plant was given the task (to train plant operaters) in the sinei desert side of the suez canal to level and fill hollows for a new railway track as the old track was being demolished and diverted owing to a bypass of a certain part of canal. A large hollow had to be filled with sand so all the dozers and scrapers consentrated on this one task.....it took most of the day and a large hole was made to get the fill. The hole was 10 to 15 foot deep. Next day we arrive to do another shift...low and behold it was half full of water...must have come from suez canal.

What a blessing our own private swimming pool and was it needed!! funny thing we were 2 to 3 miles away from the canal so we all sermized it had seeped in. One downfall when we came out from swimming we all turned pure white with the salt in water. we didnt care it was so hot and it gave us a little respite from the heat and grind. Ohh happy memories. The pic. of me greasing the rollers of the D8 it was needed every day....lot more tales about this but my fingers are worn down....good health to you all.....Mitch.
