, 1 Training Regiment RE in 1955 written by Brian Sanders
That first day in the Army as a national serviceman - I had left home in the morning with tears in my eyes and also in the eyes of my mother - as the bus left the village, I wondered just what my new life had in store. We arrived at Malvery station and were herded in to a 4 tonner - it was dark and cold in February 1955 and I was beginning to miss mum and dad and the warmth of home. Lots of chatter amongst us new recruits - we all tried to be brave but even the hardy ones were missing home. We were ushered into the cookhouse for our first meal - tomato soup (watery and hardly edible) with a chunk of bread and the butter (sorry marg) was bobbing around in a huge dish and to get it you needed to be an expert with the fork (spear). The main course was kidney - I hated kidney, with cabbage, carrots and POM (potatoe) mash. This was followed by blamange or jelly (not both) and a mug of tea.
I hated the lot and wanted to get home - but I was now in the Army whether I liked it or not and that evening I had to pack up my civilian clothes ready to be sent home to mum.
Yes, I hated that experience - but I stayed in for 37 years and loved it; such is life! |
