Canal Zone Egypt in 1948
written by Raymond Hoff

I was serving in the Royal Signals as a Line Mech at No3 GHQ Signal Regiment Fayid for the greatest part of 1948. I was out stationed at the Radio Transmitter Site south of GHQ and lived on site with three other Line Mech. The Radio Mechs came up from GHQ each day and returned there when the night shift came on duty. Us Line Mech were looked after by an young Arab man called Abdul and he use to do our laundry and sometimes go to the local village and get eggs and other supplies to supplement the daily rations brought from GHQ.

One of the shift Officers built an amateur Radio station where he was able to contact other Hams from all over the world Contact Cards would be sent and received giving details of signal strength and times of establishing contact.

I remember the Basuto soldiers who patrolled and guarded the entrance to the site. In off duty times we often watched them practice their war dances. Sometimes they woud be in full tribal costumes. This was a very colourful spectacle.

I left the canal zone to return to the UK fron Port Said on the 11th December 1848 and disembarked at Liverpool on the 22nd 1948. Can anyone help me in remembering the name of the vessel that brought many of us home. I had demob number 76
