Royal Engineers Survey Regt. Singapore in 1960 written by Gordon Thompson
I was posted to 570 Map Reproduction Troop Singapore, in 1960.
I was one of four Lithographic Machine minders posted at that time.
The other Sappers were:
Jack Rigby; Brian Watts; and Tony Brinkworth
We lived in Gilmore Barracks , Pasir Panjang, Singapore, and travelled by army truck to the Unit daily. 570 Map Reproduction Troop eventually became 84 Survey Squadron,
The Printing Unit was fully air conditioned, ( for the sake of the printing paper). and at that time the majority of the personnel there were National Servicemen. National service was gradually being fazed out over the next few years. I keep in contact with Brian Watts, Tony Brinkworth, and also Michael (taff) Blackmore( my colleague on the printing Press). also I keep in touch with Bob Sharmon who lives in Nottingham now. I have joined the Re Survey Reunion Group, and have met up at Denizen Barracks in Hermitage ,a few times( where originally I trained at the School of Military Survey.)
Unfortunately, there have not been many sappers from my Service in the RE Survey at the reunions, but I did meet up with a few people who had been in Singapore in the 1960;s. I returned to the UK by Troop Ship (The Nevassa) in September 1961. and was demobbed from Chatham Barracks that year. |
