Army Commandos in 1945 written by Bernie Graham
At the end of hostilities in 1945, the Army Commandos were disbanded and we were all returned to our units. Anyone who was around in WW2 might remember that the cap badge of the parent unit was worn in the green beret. I had enlisted in the Essex Regiment but had never served with them, as after basic training I joined the CommandosSo in November ‘45 we were shipped back to the Essex Regiment. The draft included some members of the Royal Fusiliers who for some reason were included in the draft.
The bloke in the bed next to mine was a Fusilier maned John Ramsey, and we became good friends. He was a strange character, he seemed to be able to get a leave pass without any problems. But we got on very well, he was a happy person, always ready with a smile and a joke.
Anyway, at the end of January 1946 I was posted to the 8th Suffolks, and we went our separate ways.
Many years later I saw a photograph of John in a newspaper , It appeared he was a well known safebreaker who had just broken out of Barlinne prison. The story was told that he was one of the best cracksman in the country, who was released from prison in 1942 in order to open safes in occupied Europe. After the war he went back to his old ways and thats how he ended back in Barlinne.
If you would like further information about John Ramsey there is a very good article on Googlel |
