HMS Nith - Headquarters ship - Gold beach. She was in the initial assault wave and her task was to supervise the landing of the 231st. Infantry Brigade, near to Arromanches.
June 24th.1944 hit by one of the German 'Mistel' composite weapons,whereby the cockpit of old JU88s were stripped & packed with three tons of explosive. Above was mounted a FW190 in which the pilot had control of both planes and released the bomber when target was in sight.Casualties of Nith amounted to 10 KIA and 27 wounded.The account of the action can be found in the book 'Mistel' by Robert Forsyth.
