Egypt/Cyprus in 1956
written by Brian Taylor

Joined 86 Coy HY GT RASC based in Ferry Point Ishmalia Egypt Nov 55 until March 56. When we got there was over the moon thought it was so warm after leaving the UK winter Temp about 65 if I can remember, Swum across the canal just opposite the French Hospital the old hands thought we were mad going swimming at that time of year but to us it was like mid summer, how things would change after being out there a while and tasting real hot weather. Posted to Cyprus in March 56 took our trucks with us on the LST Even Gibb.We joined 65 Coy at Golden Sands camp Famagusta right on the beach if anyone can remember. The troubles were in full swing at this time in fact right up until I came home July 58. however this did not take away from a great time and mostly good memories. We worked mostly out of the the docks as a company until we chenged our pre war Laylands for AEC's I then drove an Ice Box taking meat and butter to Dekilia, Nicosia, and a new base just being built Episkopi,we all worked very long days and weeks then relaxing when there were no ships to be off loaded. Our relaxation in the main was drinking Keo climing over the wire to visit the Spitfire and other clubs that had remained open and dodging the MP's as we were not aloud out due to the troubles. it all seems along way off now but we only remember the good times we forget getting ready for guard duty after a long days driving. Happy days!. It would be nice to hear from anyone who served with me. Chicko Taylor as I was then Known.
