RAF Swinderby, Basic Training in 1971 written by Mike Hughes
The joyful welcome at Newark Castle Rail Stn (Oct 4th 1971) by Cpl Vic Cappon. "Right you ’orrible lot, your in the Air Force now so remember everyone’s equal BUT some are more equal than others", pointing to his Cpl’s stripes. He was the ’ard nut’ Cpl ’Budgie’ Glessenger (Rock Ape) was the clown! Flt Sgt Littlewood was fair but strict where necessary.Someone found a liquid floor polish called "DUEL" it was good for glossing your toe caps on your No 1 DMS shoes, until it rained then it went milky white (ugh). So we on Intake 37/71 (Shiny) 10 Flt, 2 Sqn put it to it’s correct usage, shine the floors! The old heavy bumpers and polish were made redundant while we accepted the ’praise’ of shiny floors from the flt cpl’s. Word filtered back to us after ’passing out’ that the new intake accomodating our old rooms had problems caused by using the old floor polish and bumpers the ’Duel’ had lifted like a skin, oops! Then we had our three night’s jolly in Sherwood Forest under bivouac’s at the right time Oct/Nov abit cool at night! F Sgt Littlewood had softened by this time and played a trick on one of the young lads, he asked him to plug his electric razor into the hole in a tree, the lad went off then came back and said ’sorry F Sgt I can’t find a socket to plug into’ the F Sgt screamed ’if you want a job done do it yourself’ and went off and put the plug in a hole between two branches and switched the razor on. The look on the poor lads face when he realised he had been the butt of a joke, because the razor was a rechargeable one! |
