Royal Engineers Regiment, "Pans People" at Ballykelly in 1972 written by Richard Gildea
With Christmas imminent, snow on the ground and daily trips up and down the Limavady road. Long working hours in Derry, on " The Creggan". Our C.O. bless him, decided that we all needed a bit of cheering up, so he invited dear old Frankie Howard and his ensemble to visit Ballykelly, with the intention of entertaining the troops!
.Word quickly spread that "Frankie" numbered among his fellow entertainers, the delightful "Pans People" ( I think they knew they were safe with Frankie)! We had relocated our Squadron bar, from Nienburg in Germany. We did this by making modifications to one of the Airfield "Hangers", using all the Engineering skills at our disposal.
(Each of us having intimate knowledge of a typical Bar layout) Come the great day, we had perfected our chat up lines.
Some of the lads had even been presumptuous enough, as to tidy up their bunk beds (Just in case). Dear old "Frankie" went through his routine and received a great ovation (The ovation was mostly for bringing the girl’s with Him). The Ladies from "Pan’s People" seemed quite comfortable being surrounded by Squaddies (So did Frankie).
As the night wore on and the girl’s mingled with the lads in the bar, various ranks were seen to be jockeying for position. the highlight of the whole tour of Ireland for me, was that I received a lovely smile from the "Truly Stunning" Cherie! The following day, back on the "Creggan" various stories were told and outrageous claims were being made, about who "Pulled"whom. Suffice to say only one appeared to have any merit.
One Officer was seen escorting dear old "Frankie" back to his Billet. "Ooh Missus"
