SUEZ CANAL/HUNGARIAN UPRISING in 1957
written by David Glen

Can remember the Wesendorf camp in BAOR under the 1st The Royal Dragoons was inundated with many hundreds of Reservist from the UK. who had been called up for the Suez Crises. These Reservists consisted of many guys from other regiments who never expected to be returned to barracks and had either destroyed or chucked away their uniforms and reserve kit. What a bloody mess. It took some several weeks before these reservists were found places in their old regiments and by that time, the Suez Crisis was nearly over..

The Hungarian Uprising: The Royals regiment was placed on a 48 hour armed up standby to move rapidly to the Wesser River, if the Russians decided to invade the West and Austria. The camp was an old German Luftwaffer station some 2 miles from the then East/West German border and had an American Radio Listening station attached to the Regiment out on the fields some yards from the camp. As we British guys sweated out the 48 hours standby with some genuine intrepidation, it was clearly remembered by most, the American army group ’sneaking’ out late at night, through the camp gates all hunkered down in their vans heading west. I saw them go as I was on gate guard duty. Typical Yanks! We all waved them farewell with the customary two fingers!
