RAF Shepherds Grove, NATO EXERCISES in 1949 written by dennis walter barnes
I remember the Grove with affection, and
when NATO Exercises took place being at
night in the Pub in Stanton Village and a guy would come in and shout ’’The Kites
are Back’’ and everyone would quickly down
thier beer and rush off back to the Airfield
on thier bikes Great Stuff
DennisKite in the telegraph wires One day in 1949 a trainer Chipmonk Aircraft somehow got itself caught up in the telegraph wires just outside the Base I had
never seen such a strange sight The pupil
and Instucter were both OK and so was the Aircraft it appeared. The crew had to be rescued by the Fire Brigade My regret was that I did not have my camara with
me Much more serious an event was when a Meteor Trainer from Stadishall crashed on the runway
and killed the young pilot The ASI had failed due to a blocked Pitot head [Bee]
An instuctor flying another plane tried to give him the correct landing speed by flying alongside but it failed and the A/C
stalled onto the runway Had he been flying
the A/C from the rear cockpit he would have been OK ITWAS UNTOUCHED All the
damage was to the front Cockpit Sad. |
