HMS Barfoss. Suez 1956 in 1956 written by Pete Carmody AB R-584135
I was a volunteer MN AB on the HMS Barfoss (boom defense vessel) and went to clear the canal during the Suez crisis, we fastened on to a wreck in Port Said Harbour and were under fire from snipers from ashore and also under threat from scuba divers trying to mine the vessels to stop them working. The Royal Marines were on constant patrol, to keep us safe, only respite we got was on the depot ship HMS Devon, where we could go and watch a movie or buy a couple of beers,
we were repatriated on the HMS Anzio on Dec 23rd when the UN took over. We sailed for Malta (Christmas at sea was good) from Malta we were flown to Black Bush by military transport.
Do we get a gong for this? |
