RAF Regiment 1 SQN AND THE QCS in 1971 written by TONY DUGARD
I DONE MY BASIC TRAINING AT SWINDERBY THEN POSTED TO RAF WITTERING, HAD MANY A GOOD NIGHT IN STAMFORD AT THE WEEK END GOT DEPLOYED TWICE TO NORTHERN IRELAND BUT THEN GOT POSTED TO THE QCS AT UXBRIDGE AFTER GETTING AN OFFICERS DAUGHTER PREGNANT AT WITTERING, THE QCS WAS A GOOD POSTING, I LOVED ALL THE CEREMONIAL STUFF AND ALL THE BULL THAT WENT WITH IT, FUNNY THING NOW IS I LIVE NOT TEN MINS AWAY FROM THE BASE ALTHOUGH NOW IT HAS CLOSED DOWN, BUT EVERY TIME I PASS THOSE GATES IT ALL COMES BACK.When I left school at the age of 16 the only work in my area (Paignton S Devon) was seasonal so I went for the RAF Regiment, then later into the Army after being medically discharged after an incident on the falls road in N Ireland, I joined the Royal Corps of Transport ( now known as the RLC) and had alot of good times there as well, but out of the two services I much prefered the RAF Regiment, it had more disciplin especialy in the QCS.
When I finally left the service`s and returned to civy it took me a while to realise what a mistake I had made, but once I got a job as a European driver in articulated vehicles it become settling, but I still miss the bull and disciplin that went with it. |
