The Battle of the Rhine in 1967 written by PATRICK DUFFY
Remember the battle of the Rhine, 1967
This was a Bty outing which got a little out of control.
All the officers and men of P Bty 5th Field Regt RA, after a very long hard scheme, were in vited to attend a trip down the Rhine with booze and food paid for from Bty funds.
unfortunitly the Germans did not take to our rather loud drunken singing of all the rather near the bone rugby songs, and of course all those other very well composed songs we would save for the Bty smoker.
All hell broke lose the Germans started to compete and with us, and with in minutes fighting brokeout all over the ship. I was amazed to see the BC, BK, TROOP COMMANDERS, EVEN THE BSM got stuck in.
Police arrived by the dozen and commenced using the long white sticks and started knocking the hel out of anyone that moved.
Word got round to make our own way back
to camp, which we did however, their was druken unshaven, stinking squddies arriving back for days after, some thumbed lifts, some brought back by the MPs,German Police, Ambulance, Etc etc,
or just decided to take extended leave.
I am sure it was entered into the Bty History records as the Battle of the Rhine, even the BC was up on ordrs in front of the CO. I can not remember what the Bty was given by way of punishment, I am sure we sent on a week ot two,s scheme, and fatigues, yes every one of us uncluding the BSM Dug Clewlow.
One member of the Bty Tom Lewis, has a full 8mm film of the whole event, and
beleave me it is very funny indeed.
If any one remembers please contact me or if you know where Tom Lewis is and you have contact with him please ask him to call me.
Good Luck Everey one.
