RAF Akrotiri, in 1968 written by George Parke
My time of 1967-1968. On Strike Wing Akrotiri. 6,32,73 and 249 Sqdn Canberras. What a time, detachments every other month to Malta, El Adem and the special one to Tehran. We stayed in the Sina Hotel. We moved out of Akrotiri when they closed the runway to extend it for the Coming Vulcans. We went first to Nicosia, then to Malta, many a great night at Ronnies Bar at Hal Far. Then we flew to Meherebad Airport in Tehran. Fantastic place oh how times change. Anybody out there remember the tornados of 1968 we were trying to tie down Canberras when they struck the camp. Despatched the Helicopter Flight acros the runway and cut a swath through Married Quarters. |
