Duke of Edinburghs Royal Regiment, in 1958 written by Richard Henry Hodgson
Does anyone remember, when in Cyprus,I was the Cook. A patrol on leaving the base asked if I could deal with half a dozen
chickens. Yes I said. On their quick return, they handed over several headless
chickens which had left a trail of blood.
This was put out over the radio as had
someone been shot!
I hung the chickens down a well until
things quietened down. A few hours later
I plucked, cleaned and cooked them for
the next day.(Probably Christmas Day
my memory is not so good). In the
morning I discovered that the local dogs?
had dragged some of the chickens away
from the container. To make up for the loss I quickly steamed spotted dick and
custard. Some of the lads were very
angry that there was such small chicken
portions.Nobody believed me.I was praised by one of the officers though
for doing a nice meal.
Honestly lads, this is the truth! |
