Cyprus - Limassol 1960 - Mistaken Identity in 1960
written by Michael French

On one of the rare occasions I went into Limassol town, I was approached by a local gentleman with an open newspaper in his hands. "Excuse me sir, is this you?" he asked and pointed to a photo in the newspaper of Anthony Armstrong- Jones alongside Princess Margaret. I naturally told the curious gentleman I was not, and never gave this incident of mistaken identity another thought.

A year later back in the UK after my demob and while working in a London office, the Tea Trolly Lady made a point of telling me I looked like Anthony Armstrong-Jones and began addressing me as "Anthony". She also went on to say I should be proud to be his look-alike, as she thought he was very good looking.

Well I immigrated to Canada in July 1962 and soon after got a job as a Teller for a bank in Toronto. One day soon after settling into my new job, an elderly gentleman smoking a cigar came up to my Teller window and balled out "Good morning Lord Snowdon". I felt everyone in the bank turned to see who this gentleman was addressing as "Lord Snowdon", and I just wanted to shrink behind my counter and disappear.

From that day on this little old man with a cigar in his mouth always came to my teller window to be served by me, and with a wide grin on his face continued to address me as "Lord Snowdon".
